I am excited to invite you to the 4th annual “Restoring the Neighbor Back to the Hood” Family Fun Day: School Supply Give Away. In just 1 short year, through hard work, dedication and your valued support, we have been able to double last year’s contribution of 250 backpacks to over 500 backpacks for our area youth!
This is a grassroots event which will capture the essence of what it means to “restore the neighbor back to the hood”. Our goal is not only to provide Detroit families with live entertainment, free food, games and plenty of prize giveaways, but it is also to demonstrate what it means to be neighborly to one another in a stress and drama free environment.
We will also be taking this opportunity to recognize those who have utilized their voices, resources and talents to give back to their communities. The following awards are being introduced: “The Life Time Achievement of Community Service Award” will be presented to several distinguished elders who have dedicated over 30 years of their lives to improving the quality of life for Detroit and it’s citizens; The “Gil Scott-Heron Award” will be presented to different Detroit Poets and Hip Hop Artists who have chosen to utilize not only theirs voices in order to bring awareness of social consciousness but who are actively involved in bettering their communities as well; The “Restoring the Neighbor back to the ‘Hood Award” will be presented to many different community institutions and organizations who are rooted in the heart of the City of Detroit and on the front lines everyday helping combat social and economic decay in their communities; and finally the “Yusef Bunchy Shakur Award” will be given to a young man who has prevailed over social challenges facing many of our youth by becoming a positive and productive member of our the community.
This event will be historic on so many levels. You do not want to miss out on an opportunity to be a part of the change we all want to see in the City of Detroit! We will see you there!

This time the salon topic will be “Direct Action and Our Local Community.” As our economic and social landscape continues to change it becomes necessary for librarians to become advocates and activists for intellectual freedom, access to information, social justice, and education. The beginning questions that this salon will address are: What role to librarians and other library workers play in their own community? When is it appropriate to step in and DO something? When is it necessary?
The goal of this salon is to discuss local issues, the politics behind direct action and librarianship. This event is free and open to the public. You do not necessarily have to be an LIS student to attend. All are welcome.
